Drill training in York

‘Agtrack attends DTS training in York’

On Friday 28th we travelled up to York to attend a drill training day. David and Dan both felt it was a very informative and interesting seminar. The day was primarily based around the new DTS (deep tillage seeder) range of drills but we also covered the Sumo Seeder in some depth.

Marcus Ainley(Sumo drill specialist) lead the day with help from Will one of the designers at Sumo and we covered all aspects of the DTS from folding and unfolding procedure to calibration and set up. The training day has left us better informed and ready to recieve our 4m DTS due in soon, if you would like a demonstration please contact us to book.

“More Success With Pottinger!”

We are very pleased to announce that we are now selling Pottinger Products!

We believe their range of Grassland, Tillage and Drilling equipment will compliment our existing range of products and give more choice to our customers.

Pottinger are well known in the industry for their ‘Silage Wagons’ but they also have a wide range of very good quality grassland equipment including front and rear mowers, rakes, and tedders. And on the tillage side, we can offer cultivators, ploughs, power harrows and drills.

Pottinger are an Austrian based company with their UK offices in Corby, they have a fantastic parts and backup service with most parts stocked in this country ready for dispatch at short notice which should help to give peace of mind to our customers.

Visit to the EMILY factory in France

A couple of weeks ago David and Dan braved the ferry crossing in order to visit the team at the Emily factory near Brest in France.

We started with some general introductions to the team in the offices followed by a detailed tour of the factory, a visit to the design department and the research and development area. We were then shown some of the machines in action and introduced to a few new items which are now available such as the ‘Self powered rotary brush’ for attaching to a standard forklift and ‘Melodis’ buckets you could park a car in!!

The whole team were very friendly and the factory was extemely impressive, Emily sell all over the world now and are looking to build a new factory in order to accomodate demand in the next year.

Cley Hill Farm Soil structure

‘The key to continued productivity and prosperity’

With the wet weather this year the annual process of soil preparation and planting has been a struggle for all of us, but here at Cley Hill we have had some encouraging results this November with our oil seed rape.

This year, with conditions as they were, we did not manage to get the OSR in the ground until the 26th and 27th September! So we were pushing our luck a little. However, during a recent visit by agronomist ‘Simon Trenary’  from Country Wide Farmers we found that the root structure of the OSR plants was, in fact, very good indeed.

The Field in question, ‘Big Ham’ was cultivated using a 3m wide ‘Sumo trailed Trio.’ The legs were set shallower than usual due to the wet conditions and the fact that in the previous years we have used the same machine which has left the soil in great condition. A ‘D Ring’ press was then used to firm and work the seed bed even further.

We planted using a ‘Sumo Uni-Drill’ with the drill spacing at 18.5cm. The cast press wheel  behind the drill helped to further consolidate the seedbed and has since proved to have reduced slug damage significantly.

On the subject of slugs, we do have a problem some years, particularly in ‘Little Ham’ the adjacent field to the one mentioned above and it seems that using a press, or in this case, the press roller on the back of the ‘Trio’ does help to keep the slug damage to a minimum. This care in preparation has resulted in a good, free draining, even seed bed with minimal ‘ponding.’ The Trio’s ability to produce this even seed bed has resulted in good establishment, long, straight tap roots, and the plants are tight to the ground with a short hypocotle minimising the chance of wind damage as they grow.

All in all a good success, thanks to the diligence of David, the quality of the machinery used to prepare the ground and the advice of our agronomist Simon T.
